The Lake Reset: Why Slowing Down Was Exactly What My Nervous System Needed

This summer, I gave myself a pause.

Six days. No Wi-Fi. Just the lake, my kids, and the space to breathe.

After months of juggling motherhood, childcare, shifting home routines, and the constant pressure to “keep up,” I knew something had to change. I wasn’t broken. I was overloaded.

And the solution wasn’t more discipline. It was more margin.

Here’s what our camping trip reminded me about balance, energy, and what it really means to be well as a high-achieving mother—especially one with ADHD.

Why I Needed This Reset

Motherhood in transition seasons is uniquely disorienting. You’re not who you were. You’re still becoming. And in the in-between, it feels like you’re supposed to do it all without dropping a single ball.

For me, that looked like:

  • Never-ending mental to-do lists

  • Decision fatigue by 10am

  • A body that felt tense, tired, and trapped

I kept thinking, “If I could just plan better, try harder, get up earlier…”

But what I actually needed was space to exhale.

What Shifted at the Lake

As soon as we got there, everything slowed.

I stopped waking up with urgency. I watched my kids play without trying to multitask. I cooked meals over a campfire. I took off my watch.

Without the constant input and obligation, I remembered:

  • My body feels best when it’s not rushed

  • My energy is cyclical, not linear

  • Rest is productive when it’s regenerative

I stopped managing and started mothering.

I stopped pushing and started playing.

And I felt my energy return.

What I Want You to Know

You don’t need to escape to the lake to reset—but you do need to create margin.

Whether that looks like:

  • A walk without headphones

  • Letting the laundry sit a little longer

  • Saying no without explanation

Your nervous system thrives in simplicity.

If you’ve been holding your breath, this is your permission to pause.

You’re not lazy. You’re not behind.

You’re simply overdue for a rhythm that actually supports you.
